The new shift bid at the airline started on Monday. My work schedule for the next few months is 6pm - 10pm with Sunday and Monday off. I chose this shift on purpose for a couple of reasons including:
1 - it will allow me to keep working both jobs around each other
2 - I get Sundays off! Yeah! One whole day when I don't have to work! Actually it's because then they can't keep me at the airport all night and with monsoon season approaching, I promise you that it happens!
The bad news is that it is in baggage service (okay, the news is not so bad for my dad. It is much easier for him to stop in and say "hi" when he flies in). I have always been afraid of working in baggage service. I believe that it takes being yelled at to a whole new level, one which I do not feel like experiencing. Yet, here I am.
Last night was pretty slow. I only had to file 2 lost bag claims and I was able to acurately tell several people where there bags were so they could pick them up (one was in Germany!). I was hopefull that I would get to leave work on time at 10, but a flight from Philly came in and LOTS of people didn't their bags. (for those of you that know what airline I work for, here's a hint: Don't check your bags in Philly or fly through Philly with checked bags) It was now 9:50pm and we had a line of 40 people. I stayed and helped 2 of them, then I found out that I wasn't required to stay. It was 10:30 by the time I clocked out.
Baggage service doesn't intimidate me the way it once did, but I still have a LOT to learn. Oh, and there is a guy there who wants to treat me as though I am brand new to the airport and doesn't like that I don't accept his wisdom as the word of god. He was irratating the hell out of me last night. I have decided to take the approach of smile and nod with a few "Wow that's a good idea"s thrown in for good measure. Last night I was too argumentative with him, mostly because I was in a bad mood because I was down there. Now I'm just going to stroke his ego and then do my own thing. He'll figure out I'm not an idiot soon enough. Besides, there aren't enough employees down there to start making enemies in my first few days. :)
Believe me, I will keep you posted!

sounds like working will be loads of fun the next couple of months. I'm glad they dont' require you to stay otherwise you would never get home.
Oh, it is only a matter of time before I am required to stay late. The good news is that they have to tell me an hour before my shift ends if I will have to stay late or not. It is one of the union things, the other part is that who stays is determined by seniority, and there have been so many people hired after me, that the odds that I will have to stay very often are pretty slim. :)
