So we turn the corner and there is was. A tiny little grey car, all alone in a small parking lot. We stopped to take a picture because it was so sad (All pictures were taken by Terra and I do not have those yet).
Terra knew that we would need to jump start the car. I was foolish enough to think we could push start it. Silly me. Terra got in the car and turned the key. There was no sound, nothing, dead silence. I started to push the car out of it's spot, it wouldn't move. I had to reposition myself so my feet were on the curb instead of the grass because the grass was all muddy and I could see my feet slipping out from under me and my whole front covered in mud. It was an akward position, but I was finally able to push the car out.
Terra popped the hood. I opened the hood and looked in. I swear, there was no battery. So I started to look closer. Nope, no battery. "Terra, where did they hide the battery?" "WHAT?!" She knew nothing about a hidden battery either. I was even looking to see if there were cables and not battery. It wasn't completely rediculous that someone had stolen the battery, but no! There were no cables. I asked Terra if there was, by some chance, a Chilton book in the car. Terra said there might be and opened the trunk. Nope, no book. What about the owners manual? I'm find the battery in the index and flip to the page. No joke, it looks like the battery is in the trunk. Me to Terra "The battery is in the trunk?" I then read the caption under the picture "The battery is in the trunk." Me to Terra "The battery is in the trunk." She finds the battery in the corner of the trunk. Who would have thought? Thank goodness we also found jumper cables in the trunk. Yeah, we don't have to go buy some. I find the diagram for jumping the car, but can't remember which color is which. I'm pretty sure that red is positive and black is negative, but not sure enough to risk blowing something up. We had crappy signal out there, so after a few minutes of both of us trying to find a sweet spot where we could call someone, I was able to reach my ex-mechanic brother-in-law to confirm I was right.
It took 45 minutes to charge the stupid battery. While we were standing in the cold, waiting for the battery to charge, it started to snow. No joke, it started to snow. So, we got into the rental car, where it was nice and warm.
Terra and I have made jokes about this car being a windup toy too many times to count. Well, upon reading that it was a 12 volt battery in the car, we started joking that we should just go get a trusty 9 volt from wal mart and get out of the cold. Yes, we realize it is not the same, but it was still pretty funny. We also talked about just locating a turn key to start the car that way as well.
We FINALLY got the stupid thing started and drove the hour back to the airport to drop off the rental car.
Current travel time: 8 hours 24 minutes
