The Birthday Cruise - Dinner in the Dining Room

The first night Tara and I got to dinner a few minutes early. We were the only people at a table of 6. We were looking forward to meeting our dinner mates. More time passed and no one arrived. I finally turned to Tara and said "I'm sorry. This is all me. This is the kind of luck I have. We are going to have this table all to ourselves." She laughed at me and told me she has the same luck.

A few minutes later, the first couple joined us. The woman started to take her seat, leaving one open seat between us. The server had to stop her and ask her to sit next to me, to leave the 2 remaining seats together, for the remaining couple. She gave him a dirty look, then complied. English was their second language. I'm pretty sure they were from Eastern Europe (Ukrain, Bosnia, Croatia, etc), but they didn't talk to us much, so I'm not sure. Infact, we didn't have a real conversation with them EVER. They didn't even participate in the obligatory "what did you do today" conversation. You could tell she was high maintenance and he has a HUGE ego.

The 2nd couple showed up several minutes later. This couple was hispanic, and English was their second language as well. They were friendly, but didn't talk much either.

We spent the first night at dinner talking only to the person we were on the cruise with. I have to admit, it kind of sucked.

The hispanic couple only showed up the first night, which made our time witht the other couple all that more painfull.

By the last night (Tara's birthday) we were praying that no one would join us for dinner. Talk about a birthday wish, because they didn't! We had the table all to ourselves and were VERY happy about it. The funniest part is that we must have spent 30 minutes with our eyes GLUED to the door, HOPING they wouldn't show.

It took a while, but we stopped being paranoid that they were going to walk in any second, and enjoyed our dinner on the boat.

Our server and assistant server were AWESOME! I told our server on the first night about my dairy allergy. He made sure that I didn't have anything I couldn't eat. He had the chef make stuff without milk/butter, just for me. I was in heaven. When I couldn't eat the desert, he brought me a bowl of whatever fruit topping they were using that evening. The was great.

The assistant server kept Tara and I in sourdough rolls while we waited for our meal. She also made sure that our water glasses were never empty, which was quite the task (we drank a LOT of water). She was very nice. We would thank her everytime she would give us a roll or refill our water. Everytime she would respond "My Pleazuuuah" wich was eventually shortened to "pleazuuuah" because she had to say it to often. I don't remember where she was from, but I will never forget the way she said "pleasure."

She was also the person who brought us any alcohol we purchased. I got a glass of a really good pinot noir every night with dinner. On the last night I got a glass of sparkling wine for both of us. I made the mistake of telling the assistant server that it was our birthday. When she returned I told her we didn't want any singing (they had been gathering servers and singing Happy Birthday all week long). She said it was too late, she had already told the others. They were actually really cool about it. They waited until the end, put 2 candles in one brownie (because I couldn't eat it) and our server, asst server and buser sang to us. It was great!

Below is a picture taken on the last night with our server (behind me) and our asst server (behind Tara). I never got our asst servers name, but our server was Rohan.
